I would suggest the following:
1) Find out all of the airlines that fly to those small airports. Many times there are airlines that flights do not appear on Expedia and Orbitz. For example, if your small airport has a United Express float, fly to destinations where United flies, that will be cheaper than if you try to fly to Atlanta (Delta) or Houston (Continental) have their hubs. That is why it is important to know which airlines fly to your airports.
2) I recommend the following sites to compare prices:
http://www.sidestep.com
http://www.kayak.com
http://www.lastminutetravel.com
http://www.onetravel.com
3) Flights are cheaper if you fly on weekdays, also search for flights during the day, not at night as you wont have that many options.
4)have you consifdered taking public transit to a place where Southwest flies? Greyhound is not a bad option and you get student discounts.
Small airports are always expensive as they cant give you volume discount.

Try Air NZ – they have a HUGE airfare sale starting today. (21 Nov 07)
It depends on if you're from the US, or west coast. I've seen some reduction in fares on the discount travel sites like travelzoo.com, kayak.com, expedia.com priceline.com- cheaper now than they were in the summer, with the gas so high!
THE BUS IS THE CHEAPEST FORM OF TRAVEL AND THE FIRST CLASS BUSSES ARE VERY NICE
even an hour. go to the airport and if a crazy old woman was to get the flight they might give you her ticket
There are no standards for that situation, and no fixed percentage discounts. It depends on where you want to go and how many other people also want to go there.
Popular destination will probably have very little, if any, discount, and the planes will all be full anyway. You could end up paying more than just about anyone else. If the place you want to go has a half empty plane headed that way, then you are more likely to get a bigger break on the price, but that is never guaranteed. The airlines have very confusing pricing methods.
When you approach the ticket agent, and get a price for the destination you want, you can always decline to buy it and go to a different airline that offers flights to that same place.
Doing things that way can work if you really don't care about when you fly – today, tomorrow, the next day…. If you have to be someplace within a specific time, then you will be much better off reserving a ticket ahead of time.
not really… your best bet is going to be to go to the "cheap ticket" websites and find the best fare possible. Sometimes, looking on individual airline websites is also helpful in finding cheap tickets. I would suggest trying http://www.kayak.com, which is a website that searches a bunch of other websites to try and find the best fares. I found some fares for around $2000 return, per person, but this is going to vary A LOT depending on your dates. Hope this helps.
for cheap flights, try http://airfare.bootsnall.com/. the results do not include taxes but the fares are cheaper than other fares online.
you can also try http://www.expedia.com or http://www.travelocity.com
hope this helps.
